The Story of
LSU CIA&CRM
From a pioneering vision in 1985 to a global leader in internal auditing and cybersecurity risk management education, discover the journey of the program that shaped an industry.
A Pioneer's Vision
In 1985, when Internal Audit was barely a recognized field, Dr. Glenn Sumners founded what would become the world's first university-based internal auditing program at Louisiana State University. With vision and determination, he created a curriculum that would not only educate students but would define an entire profession.
For over 42 years, Dr. Sumners left an indelible mark on both the center and the industry itself. His dedication to excellence and professional development shaped generations of auditors, risk managers, and compliance professionals who would go on to lead organizations worldwide.
A Global Impact
Under Dr. Sumners' leadership, the program matriculated over 4,000 students, with more than 2,500 serving in Internal Audit roles. But the program's impact extends far beyond internal auditing alone. Alumni have gone on to shape enterprise risk management, cybersecurity, governance, risk, and compliance across countless organizations and industries worldwide.
The program's excellence is recognized globally through the Institute of Internal Auditors' (IIA) designation of the Dr. Glenn E. Sumners Award, given annually to the student with the highest CIA exam score globally—a testament to the quality of education and the legacy of excellence established by Dr. Sumners.
Evolution for a Digital World
In 2021, recognizing that technology had come to underpin every aspect of the modern business world, Dr. Sumners rebranded the program as the Center for Internal Auditing and Cybersecurity Risk Management. This transformation reflected his understanding that the security of those technologies would be key to the future education of risk professionals—preparing students not just for today's challenges, but for tomorrow's opportunities.
